Lovesliescrushing: Ghost Colored Halo EP

ghost colored halo EP Cover Art

Ghost Colored Halo EP is the work of Chicago shoegaze duo Lovesliescrushing. The five track EP starts with an epic sounding long ambient drone piece and then transforms into lush orchestral textures that challenge one's perception of what can be done by a duo with elements of guitar, noise and vocals. The tracks seem to tower far above the realm of the listener and become almost transcendental in their listening experience. This is a great EP. Stream and buy the Ghost Colored Halo EP at the link below.

Stalagmites: Rainbow Reptile/Howling At The Moon

Rainbow Reptile Cover Art

A single, a mere two tracks, can't say much about a band. However, in the case of Stalagmites a single speaks volumes. Rarely does a band come around that can just blow one away with two tracks. This is what the debut single from Stalagmites did on my first listen. Instantly these UK shoegazers grabbed me with powerful indie rock. The two songs are excellent, the vocals suberb and the instrumentation is what garage music should be. This is a band that has all the ingrediants for mass appeal. Get in on the ground floor and say you knoew them when. Stream and download the Stalagmites single for free at the link below.

The Lazy River Road Cover Art

Toronto band Dress Rehearsal just released a new single that is the harbinger of the band's trancendence to the status of major players. The tracks River Blue and Morning Grey are some of the best new freak folk I've heard in a long while. Fans of Mumford and Sons and Fleet Foxes will find the best elements of both in Dress Rehearsal's music. New Video From My First Earthquake, We Float

Here's a trippy new video from My First Earthquake for their track We Float.

Behavior: New York Times

New York Times Cover Art

New York Times is the latest EP from NYC dream pop trio Behavior. The five tracks have a lo-fi production texture, heavy reverb on out back vocals and up front synths. The guitars supply wondeful accents and harmonies with interesting phrasing. While the drums are prominent, the bass is, unfortunately, largely lost in the mix. There is a distinct post-punk influence on New York Times and a generally edgier feel than one would find from California dream pop bands. Given the dirth of beach music this year, Behavior are a welcome change that shows the genre has more legs to it. Stream and download New York Times at the link below.

Friday, November 11, 2011

The beats are heavier, the synths are heavier, there is the occational lo-fi-aesthetic and twangy, reverby guitars, while the vocals are strong, not pushed back. Dempsey gives us an evolution of synthpop, where the genre moves closer to both electronica and indie rock. The whole package is a welcome blend of the best of these influences. Dempsey do it right and the result is a sterling debut EP. Stream and download Dempsey at the link below.

Flatsound: Cassette Recordings

cassette recordings Cover Art

Cassette Recordings is the latest album from California artist Flatsound. Cassette Recordings is a lo-fi album that, rather than having that noisy lo-fi genre sound, is actually recorded as lo-fi as it gets. The nine tracks were recorded on a RadioShack VOX voice activated cassette recorder. This production aesthetic gives the tracks a legitimate feel that enhances the forlorn themes of the lyrics. The album ranges from haunting folk textures to dark garage ambience and serves as a tonal poem illustrating Flatsound's morose journey. Stream and buy Cassette Recordings at the link below.

Stranded Cover Art

Stranded is the new EP from San Francisco shoegazer Para Siempre. Stranded serves up 4 songs of lo-fi, garage rock. Noisy, jangly and reverby, this EP has all the y's covered. Para Siempre impressed earlier this year with their album Hysteria and the Stranded EP keeps the trend going with driving tracks in a similar vein to Jay Reatard, Wavves and Ty Segall.  Para Siempre are prolific with three releases totalling 19 tracks in 2011, including the Hysteria album  reviewed back in April and the EP Disorder. Esque: "Confessions", by God, as told to Peyton Burgess

"Confessions", by God, as told to Peyton Burgess Cover Art

"Confessions", by God, as told to Peyton Burgess is the new EP from FZB mid-year top 10 pick Esque. This band just gets better with every release. In my review of their album Tonightmares, I said the album "is the realization of what an art rock album can be." Well I'm sticking with that. Esque should be a major force in synth pop music. They are that good! It's only a matter of time before these guys hit major status with their radio ready, yet supremely interesting music. Get on the bandwagon with Esque and say you new them when. Race of Robots: In Dreams

In Dreams Cover Art

In Dreams is the latest album for FZB favorites Race of Robots, aka Zach Holmes and Coby Nida, from Washington, D.C. In Dreams brings us more of the band's own brand of dream pop. Glistening instrumentals frame light vocals, with the mix swirling around till the outside world is gone and only the tracks themselves are left in one's mind. Race of Robots make great music, simple as that. Stream and download In Dreams for free at the link below.

Video From Esque: Double Blind

Here's a cool video for an older track from synth poppers Esque. Leaves me in anticipation of their new EP that's coming soon.

Radio Wire Empire: Neotenic

Neotenic EP Cover Art

Detroit shoegazers Radio Wire Empire have come with a new EP titled Neotenic. The five tracks deliver more of Radio Wire Empire's unique blend of post punk with synth pop. It's a blend that works well, giving us songs that are light and airy, yet edgy. Strong vocals and guitar driven elements, both electric and acoustic give Neotenic a diverse set of sonic components that range in style from Radiohead to Hot Chip. Stream and buy Neotenic at the link below.
